Just Show up: Faces and Stories of Courage

This is us. Our faces and stories of courage.

Life has been unfolding on its regular pace, with all of its ups and downs, high and lows, triumphs and losses, energy and fatigue, laughters and tears triggering moments. Despite all of life´s happenings, the human spirit is heroic.

As life´s events and circumstances take place in my very eye, I am in awe with man´s resilience, willingness to survive, capability to fight, hopeful faith.. heroic courage. And this is the focus of this personal post, an appreciation, recognition of the stories of courage that I have witnessed in the last months.

Courage is defined as the ability to do something that frightens one; it is a manifestation of bravery or it is the strength in the face of pain or grief. It´s a trait that we display when the going gets tough, when we are outside our comfort zone, when we are facing changes and situations which are beyond our control.

And here are some of the worth mentioning accounts of courage that I witnessed these past few months.

1. My Courageous Son: During school year 2023-2024, my son was in the sophomore year of secondary education. This was the first school year that he had real, serious, threatening challenges with his grades. With all of his hormonal/ puberty changes, very demanding and busy academic schedule and personal activities such as dental appointments and extra curricular activities, my son experienced a wild roller coaster ride of emotions. He had his fair share of fit of temper moments caused by longer hours spent on doing school activities and reworking on his assignments until the basic, minimum requirement is met. More than the moments that he had his outbursts, what struck me the most was my son´s commitment to turn the tables around to pass 2nd year middle school. His sense of accountability and responsibility was evident as he pushed himself to review and prepare for his exams and eventually obtain passing marks. He also improved the quality of his homeworks and assignments by paying special attention on the criteria, requirements of the teachers. My son also stepped up by accommodating our request for additional reinforcement, tutorial sessions on Maths. My son took to his heart our pieces of advice and the feedback of his teachers. He changed his review method by dedicating quality time on the more difficult subjects. He did his best to become more independent as doing his homeworks on his own increased his confidence and capability. Despite all of these difficult and confusing moments in his growing up world, my son just showed up. As a result, my son passed the sophomore year! This school year 2024-2025, he will be entering junior high/3rd year middle school! Congratulations, son! All of your hard work paid off!! I am the proudest as your mom!

2. My Tenacious Husband: My husband is the most patient person in my universe, in my books. I am the sweetest person but in a split second, I am angry, I am pissed off with the slightest detail. My temper is outrageous. And my son acquired my personality, the mood swings, the temper, the outbursts. Our household is generally peaceful except on the occassional moments that my son and I exchange in verbal discussions. My husband is a very busy person. He loves his job. We are all professionals to the highest standards even if the situations are not the most likeable. Imagine my husband in a conference call and then all of a sudden hearing my son and I in a verbal argument in the background... Or my husband deeply focused on his job then all of a sudden, I barge into his home office blabbering about my thoughts, conversations with my family from the Philippines of which he didn´t have any idea. Most of the time, he would give me a blank look. Or that moment when all of a sudden, our son would go to his home office to seek help on some of his homeworks. As much as he would like to attend to my son, he can either be tinkering his laptop or in a conference call. My husband had his fair share of challenging personal situations, but he just showed up. One of the best showing up moments of my husband was when he took the initiative to retool, upgrade his skills. He was a pioneer in his team, organization to express solid interest on AI. He completed his post graduate, master degree on AI and that led to his new role as a successful Data Scientist! Way to go dad! We love you and I, your wife, am the proudest!

3. My Strong Mother: My mother is one of idols. The other is my father :) My mother is a selfless, loving, hardworking, always present, generous and strong woman! Quick background: My mother finished her AB English degree but became a full time homemaker when my brother, her 3rd child was born. She is the foundation of our 8 member household (2 parents and 6 children). She lost her husband, our father 22 years ago and she made sure that my youngest siblings earned their university degree. I am proud and very grateful to say that my mother administered very well the financial earnings and pension of my father. Now my mom is in her early 70s, she is diabetic, with hypertension, had both of her eyes undergo cataract operation, had a foot operation and recently this Q2 2024, had a cyst removal which was categorized as a major operation. In all of these life changing, life threatening moments, my dearest mother just showed up. Prior to her operation, she was required to go through a series of medical laboratories and medical sessions with her cardiologist, general medicine specialist, nephrologist and gynecologist/surgeon. Those sessions, aligning the opinions of her medical team to mitigate risks during her operation seemed endless. With my mother´s can do, courageous disposition and the mercy of the Lord, her operation went well, the cyst was successfully removed and my mom is fully healed, though she still needs to be careful. She´s now back to her regular programming and she now attends to her regular medical appointments to monitor her diabetes.

4. My headstrong friend: I witnessed a very good friend of mine lost her mother to cancer. Prior to her mom´s passing, my friend had to juggle being a mom to her son, delivering her work commitments and taking care of her sick mother. I kept in close contact with my friend. I wanted her to know that my prayers are with her and that I am around if she needed a shoulder to cry on. Her mother already passed away (and may she rest in peace). During the time that my friend had to take care of her mom while mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually preparing herself for the worst, my friend just showed up. It was a very taxing and sad period but with the grace and love of God which clothed my friend and her loved ones, they are getting by, Losing a loved one, death is an experience that you will never recover from. As the days, months and years go by, you go on with your life, the pain comes and goes but the longing for the departed loved one is always there.

5. My lionhearted former team manager: I know that on a professional level, colleagues, people come and go. But when a colleague is asked to leave the company, is terminated without clear reasons, I felt the injustice. It was not my call, I am fully responsible for my actions but not on the actions other people.I trust that decisions were made based on criteria. My former team manager upon learning about his termination talked to us/his team and told us to move forward. Even if he was confused about the manner he was terminated, he took it with a positive, moving forward disposition. On the 1st week that my former manager was terminated, his father passed away. And during these difficult personal and professional moments, my former manager just showed up even if he was hurting. I sincerely believe that there is always a silver lining and that things happen for a reason. More importantly, life goes on. For sure, something good will come out of this as good things happen to good people.

5. Our indomitable spirit (my siblings and I): I would like to dedicate my last account of courage account to the indomitable spirit of my siblings and I! We are 6 children who grew up in a working middle class family in the Philippines.I am very proud of my siblings. We have  collective unity, indomitable spirit, a life based on experiences and prayers that help make things happen even if they seem impossible. God has been and is very generous and good to me and my family. We lost our father at a young age, we have had our share of difficulties in life but we just showed up. I am very grateful that my younger brother´s resilience, grit for better opportunities paved the way for his work outside the Philippines. My brother´s focus, prayerful habits and strong desires and wishes were his partners in making this dream a reality. My eldest sister is like a second mom and a financial advisor to us. She is hardworking, devout and resolute. She mobilized us, her younger siblings to financially, spiritually and mentally prepare for our mother´s recent operation. Together with our youngest sister, they took turns in the conversations with the doctors and the nurses and providing updates to the rest of the siblings. All of these while both of my sisters were doing their daytime jobs and my eldest sister being a full time mom and homemaker. Resilience is evident as well in my brothers R&RB. We are living adult lives now. And even if there are not so good days at work, even if we are terribly exhausted, even if there seems to be endless activities to do, even when there appears to be seeming injustice or when days are good, we feel better, we just show up. It is our commitment to life, to our respective families, to our community and our love and gratitude to the Lord Almighty that allow us to show up, be good people and navigate through life

I know that these accounts maybe nothing compared to what the world is going through. But there are no small or big success and courageous stories. We all earned our spot and there is a place for everybody. These inspiring stories of courage are not stand-alone. They took place with the mercy, compassion, blessings, interventions and graces of our Lord. In this lifetime, it is imperative that we do good and we pray. For when man prays, God works! And whatever difficult situation, we are going through, just keep swimming, just show up. Always, the man who shows up, wins!!

Staying Mentally Healthy during this quarantine

Even if we were aware that coronavirus started in Wuhan sometime December 2019, nobody saw its rapid spread across the globe.  Governments made hurried decisions to shutdown the countries´borders and to confine the citizens in their home as a corrective measure.  Suddenly, we are facing a new way of life. Working from home while homeschooling our children, literally staying at home and being with our family 24/7, queuing to buy anything (medicines, groceries, pastries, etc), using face masks and gloves whenever outside.  On top of these, there is this growing anxiety as we fear for the welfare and safety of our love ones, the increasing negative news impacting our emotional state and the uncertainty of our future.

As we face these situations, it is imperative that we do a regular check on our mental and emotional stability. As a person diagnosed with anxiety disorder and agoraphobia, I consistently and systematically check my emotions. Anxiety disorder is unlike getting a wound that you can see the cut, put a band-aid and you know that it is healing as the cut closes and dries up. It is most likely that we are going through an anxiety phase without us even knowing it. General anxiety is triggered by situations that we need to deal with. We can incorporate healthy habits in our daily living that will help us proactively shake off anxiety both in a conscious and unconscious way.

1. It is important that we dedicate time to do mindful breathing (profound diaphram breathing) as it allows us to be present and connect to our senses.  Recommendation:  Take 5 mindful breathings everyday (close your eyes, breathe profoundly, hold your breath and release the air).

2. We need to rise above the negative situation and practice mindful gratitude. While it is most unfortunate that the pandemic has taken lives, employment and has shaken our global economy, there is still beauty in our life. We need to challenge ourselves to always look at the positive and bright side of life. There is always a reason to be thankful for.

3. As the world is slowly opening and adapting to the new normal, we should ensure that we continue to have our personal space.  While I love being with my family and I am a die hard, super duper fan of working from home, I take the time to go out on the slots approved by the government for adult outdoor activities.  During that slot, I do my mindful walking - I walk at my pace, I observe my surroundings and I reconnect with myself. I use this personal time, space to find my silence and recharge. Charity begins at home. If I am not an ease or not at the pink of health, I will not be able to take care of my family. I need to be at peace with myself so I can radiate and influence positivism as well.

4. We need to prioritize. We all have our plates full. We all have multiple roles - wife, mother, employee/professional, etc.  So we do not succumb to stress nor die in the attempt, it is important that we prioritize our tasks and our goals on a daily basis.  We only have 24 hours a day or 8-15 hours of productive hours. We finish what is due for today and tomorrow is another day!

5. We need to Accept the new normal.  We need to get used to wearing mask as part of our streetstyle fashion and hopefully it will be temporary. :)

6. We need to make the conscious effort to be relaxed, to be free from stress and anxiety. Remember, it is not about what happen to you but about how you respond to it.  Life is 10% of what happens and 90% of how you react to it. Sing, cook, read, exercise, watch Kdramas 😁, eat some chocolates, drink moderately, or do anything that will make you feel relaxed. You deserve it!

Remember, life is beautiful; la vida es bella; kay ganda ng buhay. 😊😍😇

Covid Chronicles: The NEW Normal

Spain has been in a state of emergency and quarantine since March 12 due to covid pandemic.  This means that academic institutions were closed and replaced by online, virtual classes. Government has mandated enterprises to practice work from home if possible. All business related activities (tourism, etc) that cannot work from home have been shut down except in the cases of healthcare, drugstores and food/supermarkets. All with the objective to reduce people in the street and stop the spread of coronavirus.

After 49 days, 7 weeks of quarantine, today, May 2, 2020, the adults and older people, were finally allowed to do some outdoor activity.  There is a gradual process in the exposure of the people to outdoor activities.  This is all aligned with the indicators that the Spain government, together with the WHO and the experts, have defined to limit to the minutest level the covid relapse.

I am a stickler for routine and compliance and I can safely say that I (and my family) are following the government´s and the experts advice on  social distancing, usage of protective gears and accessories and timeslots to manage the turnout of the people on the street.  These norms are most likely to stay for quite a while until the covid vaccine is available.  These norms are our NEW normal.  Sharing with you our NEW normal as we all combat covid.

Activity:
Pre-Covid:
Post-Covid/The New Normal:
Casual gear for a quick walk in the park, quick shopping, jog in the park etc.
Autumn and Winter:  Dress, Stockings, Socks, Coat and shoes or boots
Spring and Summer:  Shorts, skirts, shirts, sandals, sneakers, slip ons and slippers
Autumn, Winter, Spring Summer:  Gear + Protective gears – mask and gloves

Upon return to my home: throw rotective gears, wash hands thoroughly, disinfect  leather bag, grocery cart or reusable grocery bag  (if is cloth, put it in the washing machine), wallet, mobile phone, headset, whiteflower, rosary,   eyeglasses, shoes, etc

Remove street clothes in your mudroom or main entrance

Take a hot, relaxing shower
Bicycle ride in the park, basketball game in the park, etc.
Take your bike, basketball, etc and upon reaching home, park the bike and store, safekeep the basketball
Upon reaching home before parking  bike, trolley, and storing  basketball:  DISINFECT THEM.
Shopping, buying simple things from your friendly neighborhood stores (drugstores, groceries, flowers, newspapers, magazines, etc)

Shopping for whims (bags, clothes, books,  fashion accessories)
Everyone is in the store while patiently waiting for one´s turn

1 – 15 clients inside the store, depending on its size, hand disinfectant and gloves are a requirement prior to entering the establishment

Credit card is the promoted, preferred mode of payment

Online shopping is a go to option
Church visit and church gatherings
Almost elbow to elbow “closeness” in the pews

Completely filled with churchgoers
Still to be formalized and communicated but it is most likely that a 1-2m distance in the pews is going to be observed
Visitors in one´s home
Sky is the limit, after all it is your home
In our home: visitors are requested to leave their shoes in the mudroom/main room
School activities – school, lunch in school canteen, extra curricular activities (swimming, judo, painting, language classes, etc)

Crowded classrooms with approximately 20-30 students depending on the school population

Common lunch time with approximately 400 – 1200 students in the school canteen depending on the school population

Extracurricular with a minimum of 15 students depending on the theme
Still to be formalized.  I am certain that all parents are anxious to know the NEW normal in the schools.
Office Greetings/introductions
Formal Handshake
2 Cheek Kisses
Hugs (I am a big hugger than a 2 cheek kisses person hahaha)
Acknowledgment nod with smiling eyes
Beautiful, welcome smile

Most likely to maximize work from home scheme to maximize social distancing and conference calls

Offices will be redesigned to have at least 1-2m of distance
Public Social Gatherings
Big parties
Stadium filled audience watching football games, concerts
Movie house, restaurants, bars, museums
Very limited turnout, audience on public events.  The government has announced that no big summer festivities are allowed this summer 2020 to respect and promote social distancing

There are machines undergoing tests to validate turnout, headcount of audience on public gatherings such as concerts, etc.  This will ensure that the expected headcount is respected and is compliant with the social distancing norms.

This leaves a big impact on the businesses´ profitability
Public Transport
During peak hours: cheek to cheek mode with the other passengers.  Passengers running and pushing to get in the train or subway.

Usual sight of passengers coughing, sneezing without protective gears nor usage of hands to cover the mouth.

Every quarter or semester thorough cleaning and disinfection of the train and subway tracks and coaches
The usage of mask is mandatory and social distancing must be implemented (the how of this remains to be seen when we are in full force in commuting).

Daily disinfection of the train and subway tracks and coaches

Let´s trust the process.  Everything happens for a reason. This too shall pass.  Let´s stay positive.  Take care.

The New Normal:  massive use of masks, gloves, hand sanitizers and disinfectants. Staple pàrt of our street and casual fashion. 😊😉

Covid Chronicles: My personal list after the quarantine

Today, April 26, after 46 days of confinement, the Spain government allowed the children, infant to 12 years old, to go outdoors.  This is a milestone as we are flattening the curve, there are lower incidents of new Covid cases and for the past few days, the statistics of the treated patients are higher than the victims.  Praise and Thank God for His mercy and healing grace.

My son was hesitant to go out but eventually, he did go out with dad for a quick outdoor experience, complying with the social distancing and safety protocols laid out by the government.

I hope and pray that albeit slow, we will be able to establish our lifestyle and adapt to the new normal.  I am hopeful that small and medium sized businesses, that self employed entrepreneurs will be able to get back to full operations, that we will be able to report back physically to our offices, that school will resume and that we will be able to take the public transport again and many other things, as these would signify that we are beating the covid.

In the meantime, here is a short personal list of the shops, bars, restos and activities that I will indulge myself into when the confinement is lifted and we adjust to our new normal.  Note:  This is a very personal list.  This is a reflection of what I truly, terribly missed at a personal, whimsy level.

I will dine at or order to go at:
1. Bite Me Cafe - they serve the most delicious, innovative flavors of artisan vegan donuts/halos.
2. Restaurante Veronica - they have the most delicious home made foie, good food and desserts in general, fanciful interior, amazing service and lovely people! We are regulars since 2006! They´ve seen me when I was pregnant and my son is growing up in their eyes as well!
3. Go Hyang Mat - the best Korean restaurant in the city! And it is in my neighborhood! They serve the best JapChae, Bulgogi, Bibimbap, Jemulyeon, Rice cakes! Everything is delicious and really affordable!
4. Hattori Hanzo - a fusion Japanese resto that serves really refreshing ramen, baos and takoyaki! Delicious!
5. Taberna Maceira - our go to place for quick, economical, classic Spanish tapas and cuisine. They have the classic pulpo (octopus), croquettes, chorizo (I am drooling as I write this hahahah) 😊😉😋 And they have refreshing wine and classic Spanish desserts!
6. Five Guys Burger - my go to fastfood and comfort food - hamburger or hotdog with cheese and milkshake 😋😋😋
7. Pasteleria Mallorca - freshly baked canapes, pastries and healthy comfort food
8. O Paso De Lugo - classic spanish cuisine, really good good food - callos, tapas, lacon, everything is just good in this resto! Really love this!! And its in my neighborhood!!

I will go to:
1. Churches:  I would love to go back to Jesus de Medinacelli, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Almudena Church or just simply be in the church in my friendly neighborhood.
2. Retiro Park
3. C/Huertas, Sol, Calle Arenal, Gran Via, Plaza de España, Callao
4. Cercedilla for a hiking or walking
5. Paseo Castellana for a long (approx. 7,5 kms) and tranquil walk
6. Casa de Campo for a long quiet walk and to have some sort of "nature feels"
7. Madrid Rio
8. Museo de Ferrocarril
9. Museums - Reina Sofia, Thyssen, Prado

I will avail of the following services:
1. Acupuncture, Kobido and Ventosa massage at Yo Me Cuido
2. Foot Spa and pedicure
3. Full Body Massage at The Organic Spa
4. Eyebrows waxing/trimming and facial hair removal
5. Hand waxing

I feel like dreaming as I write this.  I am seizing the day.  I know in God´s perfect time, everything will fall into place and we will be able to enjoy our new normal. In the meantime, let us continue to trust the process, do our part so that we will continue to combat covid and as what they say in the kdramas, "AJA! HWAITING!" (which means: Never give up, never stop fighting, Fighting!).

Covid Chronicles: To Miss or Not To Miss.

Covid pandemic has changed our lifestyle and routine.  Am I missing my old routine or not? We are already on day 31 of the home confinement and the change has been noticeable.
While I am most grateful that I can work from home and that I am blessed with the essential resources to adapt in this home confinement. And needless to say, as an authentic introvert this home confinement has gave me so much time for my much needed retrospection and introspection.

But, a coin always has 2 faces. There are many facets of living that I am missing while we are in this period of quarantine.

1. Cleaning up:  Read:  Dressing up, putting on very light make-up, wearing my fancy shoes, accessories and putting on my gorgeous bags.
2. Rushing :) while tranquility is good, the occasional adrenalin rush caused by almost fixed public transport schedules, one meeting room to another, etc is a good booster
3. Seeing my boylets in the office! Yes, I am married, a mom and an old woman but... that does not mean that I no longer appreciate the looks and the appeal of my colleagues. I´ve always had my top 5 in every organization I´ve been through. I miss seeing, saying hi and chatting with my top 5 at work.
4. Interacting with peopleVisiting and getting in touch with family and friends. interacting and exchanging casual conversations withcolleagues and the cleaning lady at work.  It is amazing how a simple hi, hola, que tal, lead to profound conversations!
5. Doing our Family weekend routine - my personal early morning weekend run and long walks, weekend family dine out, weekend family long walks, visits to the park. Being spontaneous - not having plan and just taking the metro or having my feet lead me to wherever, especially on weekends.
6. Queuing and witnessing busy lines and almost "cheek to cheek" closeness in the supermarkets, public transports, bakeshops. :)
7. Buying my magazine supplies in my favorite magazine kiosk.
8. Doing online shopping and the operation is seamless. Nowadays, there is a seeming high volume of online transactions!
9.  Going to the church.

I maybe confined in my home but I am loving every second of it. As I stay at home during this covid pandemic, I am most grateful to:
1. Be able to fulfill this full time homemaker routine and lifestyle - household chores, domestic living, unlimited and limitless cooking
2. Have unhurried time to do all the household chores and work responsibilities
3. Have all of my Me time anytime I want to - reading time, meditation in the form of ironing the clothes, journaling (after 8 long months, I am able to update my blog, yehey!!) etc
4. Have unlimited netflix time (yes, you are talking to one couch potato here)
5. Be able to video call with my family in the Philippines, anytime.
6. Have all the time spent for all of my indoor physical exercises and activities.
7. Have all the time with my family - spending time with my son and husband is just the best!  Family mealtime together, always! The family that eats, prays, plays, laughs, talks and does things  together, stays together.

Life is not perfect but life is beautiful.  Hopefully, we will be able to go back to our normal routine.  Resuming to our normal routine means that the covid effect is diminishing  and we are  flattening the curve;  restaurants, museums, schools and all other trade, commerce and businesses will resume operations, so hopefully the economic impact will be mitigated.

In the meantime, let us continue to pray and seize the day. Enjoy every moment of this. There is always a silver lining no matter how difficult, gray and gloomy times may be. Hang on and keep the faith.

My Lovestory with Asiandramas

Netflix catalogue and the latest in streaming has been a staple group conversation topic in this time of quarantine.  I get all thrilled seeing comments, images, features on Korean dramas in my feed!  Kdramas give a totally wholesome feel good and giddy impact. It´s funny because as the years go by, as more and more kdramas are produced, they just keep getting better!!

I am now in my early 40s but kdramas continue to give me the feels! It all started when I was in my mid-20s. It was triggered by my first ever asian drama, Meteor Garden. It was a phenomenal hit! The lead actors were just so handsome, not the stereotype looks. The story is shallow and too much for middle schoolers, a lot of bullying, but as a young professional in my mid 20s, I got so hooked!

From Meteor Garden, Taiwan based asian drama, the subsequent dramas that I invested my time on were Korean dramas.  I started watching kdramas in my mid 20s, took a pause when I was on my 3rd year here in Spain and resumed watching 3 years after and from then on, so far so good. The list just keeps getting longer!! :D:D:D:D I still remember my "commuting days" - after a productive day at work, I lwould leave the office on time to make sure that I reach the primetime block (1930h) in the Philippine television. 😄😅

Kdramas tick because of the storyline. It tackles love, family, love triangle, ambitions, values, beliefs and all sorts of relationships.  Needless to say, the lead actors are just so gorgeous! Poreless! Beautiful! Eye candies!  They are oh so fashionable as well! There is something with the way the leads look at each other as they profess their love! The kdramas also paved the way for the famous Kdrama heart sign.

Kdramas are good stress busters, stress relievers. A glimpse of the gorgeous Korean leads is a perfect way to cap my busy, demanding and strenuous week combined by family and work obligations. I get so thrilled, I would scream like a giddy teenager and my husband gushes and supports me! Isn´t that amazing?

I am self confessed Asian drama fan and I am proud of it! It has helped me as I coped with my anxiety and with my busy lifestyle as a working mom.  It has been a perennial topic with my closest friends and it rekindles so many good and beautiful memories.

I would like to share with you a shortlist of my favorite Kdramas, Actors and Playlists.
Warning: Some our super old, which is a reflection of my age/generation. :D

Covid Chronicles: Positivity amidst the Covid Pandemic

I have had my personal blog "abandoned" for the longest time given my family and work life commitments.  My busy schedule has not changed, but today I purposely pushed myself to write this post as this feeling, this event, is something that I would like to document and reminisce when it is all gone.  I look forward to seeing this coronavirus pandemic come to an end but I will keep the astounding strength of human spirit as its best lesson learned.

It was January 2020 when it was made known publicly in Europe, in the news, that Wuhan, China is severely affected by the coronavirus.  Albeit the different geographical locations, people started to massively buy hand sanitizers and masks as preventive measures. It was also noticeable that people who take the public transport are more critical of the other passengers who were coughing by giving them the aghast looks.  There is a strong awareness on the basic symptoms of the Covid-19.  From January to late February, we were still living a normal life - daily and weekly family, school, work routine and weekend routines comprised of children in the park, get togethers in bars and chit chat and social gatherings in the restaurants and shopping malls were still evident.

It all began to change on the weekends of Feb 29 and Mar 6 when news started to spread that more and more people were admitted to hospitals and were showing signs of Covid.  The perspective of the news also changed to showcase the covid impact in Europe particularly in Italy and in Spain. It became a hot topic as we started to have first hand experience about it.  It was on the weekend of Mar 06 when it registered a high (sort of an outlier figure) volume of patients.  This eventually prompted our government to make the decision to close the Madrid educational system for 15 days from Mar 11. This has a domino effect as the rest of the autonomous regions followed suit and because schools are closed, the companies decided to modify their work from home (WFH) scheme to enable working parents to support and attend to their children.  At this rate, there were images of extensive panic buying of supplies and grocery items.  It was a distressing sight.  The government then made an official announcement that Spain is on a state of emergency and borders and territories were closed. It was also a message to calm the people that there will be regular supplies of food, that groceries and drugstores are open but all other entities are closed to prevent the transmission of the virus.  The rest of the EU and Schengen countries then followed suit.

Fast forward to today, Mar 21, 10 days since we started working from home and 6 days since we were officially in locked down/community quarantine mode, things haven´t improved in terms of the transmission of the virus, in fact as we talk about the curve, it seems that we are reaching the peak.  Hospitals continue to collapse, more and more people are showing the initial symptoms of the virus.  More and more news and private messages via whatsapp and the social media regarding the obvious lack of medical supplies and lack of preventive measures continue to circulate.

As these things continue to unfold, I continue to believe that there is a silver lining to this and this too will come to an end.  This is a global test to our human spirit and our commitment to social responsibility.  The positive and grateful person in me acknowledges the following:

1.  The medical staff, front liners in the public transportation, drugstores, groceries, police and military officers, mediamen and other professionals who are required to go to work:  While most of our working from home and strictly complying with the community quarantine, these are the professionals who are providing 1st hand service to ensure that the affected patients will recover and that the needs of the country are attended to.  I can imagine that the situation in the hospitals regardless of the location is chaotic and very stressful.  And the medicals professionals are withstanding the problematic and chaotic situations as they show their unwavering  commitment to human life.  And the front liners who are braving the everyday commute and the uncertainty to provide support to the community.  Words are not enough to thank you, but let me say it from the bottom of my heart.. Thank you, thank you very much!!

2.  Our Government and Public Servants:  While most of our governments probably acted late and disregarded the potential impact of the covid, I am grateful that our leaders are taking the stand to protect the citizens and the economy.  Everyday, the national leaders in Spain - the minister of health, minister of national defense and the prime minister make appearances to address national concerns.  Even in my country, the Philippines, which is marred by colossal corruption, the local government units and the national government are making a stand and actively supporting the people.  As the covid has a gigantic impact on the economy, I am most thankful to our governments´support and assistance programs to the people who are affected by providing financial assistance, by automating the paper works for the registry of unemployment and working with other private entities to extend the payment terms for the mortgage and loans.  Again, it is not perfect because the covid´s impact is faster and greater than the actions and decisions of the government leaders but I am not taking a blind eye on what they have done and what they continue to do.

3.  To our companies and workmates:  Our companies immediately adjusted their policies to adapt to the impact of the covid pandemic. The WFH dynamics is a clear show of confidence  on the professionalism and capabilities of the workforce to stay productive despite being confined at home with the entire family (Remember, there´s  community quarantine). I have always been a strong advocate of WFH as I practice it a lot and I can objectively say that my productivity has been affected by WFH.  Colleagues and workmates have also been more responsive.

We are facing tough times now but all things come to an end.  This too shall come to an end, without a doubt.  In the meantime, let us continue to comply and do our part so we can prevent further transmission of the virus.

Psalm 6: Prayer for Recovery from Grave Illness:  O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger nor chasten me in your wrath, Have mercy on, O Lord, for I am languishing, O Lord, heal me for my bones are troubled, my soul also is sorely troubled, But you O Lord, how long?  The Lord has heard my supplication, the Lord has accepted my prayer.
