Just Do It: A personal mantra

Just Do It is a well known slogan and a trademark of Nike. This phrase has reinforced Nike´s position as a global leader in sports and casual living merchandise brand more than the sneakers or footwear product.  This catchy slogan though was initially launched as a marketing brand, on hindsight, brings a powerful message on a personal note. In this piece, I would like to share with you my personal view on this million dollar phrase, Just Do It.

Just Do It for me is very similar to seizing the day, living by the moment or simply put, Carpe Diem.  In the evolution and transformation of my life, as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, co-worker, I have dealt with numerous experiences that have caused me joys and sadness, triumphs and losses and laughters and tears, and in all of these occassions, I got by simply by just seizing the day and going with the flow.  This mantra and this attitude has enabled me to adapt in the most challenging times of my life.

Just Do It is going with the flow. When I was learning the Spanish language, I was intimidated.  The confident speaker in me was suddenly tongue tied.  But the eternal optimist and my "can do it" attitude enabled me to come up with a gameplan that helped build my skills and confidence on learning my officially 3rd language, Spanish.  Of course, my journey to learning and speaking Spanish was made easy by my husband and my colleagues at Telefonica de España.  They were instrumental in encouraing me to speak despite my accent, lack of vocabulary and lots of uhms and ohs as fillers. I devised an all Spanish conversation challenge with my husband and we just switched to English on Thursdays.  This has increased my need to use Spanish in daily conversations. I also made a commitment to memorize at least 10 new words everyday to increase my vocabulary. I watched TV shows in Spanish, listened to radio programs in Spanish and read a lot of magazines, newspapers to increase my comprehension.  Little by little, I gained confidence and though my accent and sometimes Spanglish manner of speaking is evident, I am thankful that I gained traction and now I can say that I am proficient, if not bilingual in Spanish, speaking and writing.  Though my grammar is not and will never be perfect, I am able to defend my thoughts and my ideas and express clearly in Spanish.

Just Do It is not having any excuses. It is having the guts, the will, the drive and the determination to achieve your goals.  Rome wasn´t built overnight so we should be capable of celebrating small successes and baby steps. After all, great things start with small beginnings.  Just Do It is starting to work on your objective, at all cost.  This proved true to me when I quit smoking (oh yes! there was a time that I smoked cigarettes and I smelled like an ash tray), when I started my diet and doing physical cardio activities such going to the gym, yoga and fitboxing for a healthy lifestyle. It will not be always a straight path, there will be pitfalls and obstacles but the beauty of it all is just getting up, embracing the routine and doing it all over again.  It´s the never say die attitude.  Since then, I have quit smoking, I gave up caffeine coffee and when I have the cravings for coffee, I drink decaf, I have a routine for my gym and cardio activities; I regularly go to the gym though I had to give up fitboxing because of my tendiditis and I am now a mindful eater.  I have yet to give up though my sweet tooth.

Just Do It is a mindset and a way of life which I have embraced and I am generously inculcating to my son.  My son is now in middle school and is adapting to the rudiments and challenging demands of secondary school.  It is a mindset that must be internalized because in our life, sometimes, we just don´t have a choice; we have to live with a system or follow the norm. And that´s a student life.  As a student, you will be faced with assignments, homeworks, exams and extracurricular activities. That´s your life, your indicators, your objectives as a student. Instead of complaining big time, accept the situation and adapt, that way, you will concentrate your positive energies and convert them to productive efforts.

Just Do It is having the courage to rise above new and difficult challenges.  At one point in our lives, we go out of our comfort zone to experience life.  In my professional life, I have made difficult decisions and dealt with all sort of characters and personalities. But the beauty is rising to the occassion and staying true to yourself. When faced with a new role, a new job or a new task, there will always be uncertainties, fear, a period of adjustment. There will never be a perfect approach but it is through engaging and working iteratively that we can get the fruits of our labor.

We are all winners in our way. Let us celebrate our individuality and our ability to deal with life.  Life is unfair, is diffcult, is challenging but all worth it because life is beautiful.

Happy weekend to all. And yes! Let´s Just Do It!

Birthday Cakes/Sweets and Where to order (Madrid, Spain)

A birthday cake is a standard centerpiece on a birthday party. As a self confessed, a certified and a true blue sweet tooth, cakes, pastries are part of my day to day living. I know that is it not hte healthiest but I try to compensate with my exercise, eating moderately and striking a healthy balance.

My son inherited my sweet tooth and my love for food.  I actually beam with pride when my son gave me a score of 20, when the scale was only 1 to 10, in the cooking category. My mummy heart just exploded!!

I have managed to pull off collaboration with some pastry chefs here in Madrid for my son´s birthday cakes. I am not a good baker and just do not have the skills for bakings so I leave it to the experts.  My son and his friends look forward to his birthday cake year after year. We have had some 1D and 3D Thomas and Friends Cakes, Paw Patrol 3D cakes, Covid Cake, American School bus cake and in his recent 12th birthday, he had a bookworm birthday cake. Flavors are always on point, chocolate, which is a sure winner for kids. Although in some instances, fondant and gum pastes are used, we always inform the kids and the parents of those extremely sweet ingredients and insist that they are for decor purposes. In this post, I am sharing with you his cakes.

And if you are in Madrid, Spain, here´s a list of the pastry chefs and pastry stores where we source commission our cakes.  Hope you´ll find this useful.

Travels Post Pandemic: Cadiz, Barcelona, Vienna, Bratislava, Dubai and Manila

As we all have experienced and lived, travel restrictions during the height of covid and sort of post covid were high.

Our family of 3 did not travel outside Spain on 2020 and 2021. After our covid vaccines and following the relaxed protocols implemented in Spain, then in Europe and then across the globe, we mustered our guts and courage to travel again.

Our real 1st vacation, post covid took place in the summer of 2021, August 2021 to be exact and our travel destination was Sancti Petri, Chiclana, Cadiz.  It has been our summer go to place for the last 6 years! And boy, we missed it in 2020. We headed to the same resort, Iberostar Sancti Petri and we had the all inclusive family package.  It was an absolutely beautiful vacation. After checking in, everything was just carpe diem and just seizing the day!! Our routine during our weeklong summer holidays was the typical breakfast buffet, beach, pool, lunch buffet, tea, siesta, pool. beach, dinner buffet, cocktails by the beach, sleep and repeat. It was absolutely blissful!! Train ride was awesome and mask on board was mandatory.  The beach was tranquil albeit the humid and hot summer.  Hotel service was excellent though variety in the food can be improved.  It was memorable to have finally come back after 2 years!!

By late autumn of 2021, we also scheduled a day trip to Zaragoza to visit some of my husband´s family members, sadly though, in the cementery.  We went to Cementerio de Torrero where my mom in law and my husband´s maternal grandparents are laid to rest. And during our day trip, we also headed to the Parque Grande Jose Antonio, where we enjoyed the botanical garden and where we rented a bike.  Our best discovery was the good tapas served in Restaurante Albarracin (and we´ve been going back there ever since). We spent most of the day in the Plaza de Independencia and Plaza de España.

By winter 2021, we took our early December holidays in accordance with the school and labor calendars and spent a week long holidays in Barcelona!! As it was December, we were able to enjoy the Christmas markets in the Barrio Gotico, just in front of the Barcelona Cathedral. We also went to the Barcelona Football Club Museum and it was absolutely the best part of our holidays for my husband who is a huge Barca fan. He savored every moment of our time in the museum.  Of course, we had our photo op as a souvenir. :) We also went to see Gaudi´s works, Casa Mila, Casa Batilo and the bummer la Sagrada Familia. Such a bummer because it required a 25€ entrance fee and the entire premises was gated and covered.  I felt a big indignant about it, it belongs to the people and at some point is funded by the public´s money. People/tourists/locals should be able to have a glimpse of it. Apart from these places, we also spent a day trip in Sitges only because Lee Min Ho, one of my favortie korean actors shot one of his korean dramas there.  We enjoyed the beach and the quiet center.  We also appreciated the very delicious Catalan dishes that we had.

By spring of 2022, April to be exact and in preparation for our trip to the Philippines, we opted to travel within Europe to have a grip and understanding on how protocols and airport movements have changed due to the pandemic.  Our 1st  post pandemic trip that required a trip to the airport and a plane ride was Vienna, Austria.  Vienna was stunning , posh and just magnificent!! First world at its finest it was!! It is small compared to Madrid but it has a robust public transport network, cosmo restaurants and it was just orderly and clean! It was cold though, thus we were all covered in our winter coats.  We went to the Schronburnn palace, St, Stephen Square, St. Charles, Vienna State Opera, Belvedere Palace where we saw the original Kiss painting, Hofburg Palace, Kunst Haus Wien and Rathaus.  We also mingled with the locals and enjoyed the authentic Viennese dishes.  We reserved in the following restos: Steman, Lugeck and Grenchenbeisl which serves the lightest and juiciest Schnitzel. My favorite part of our trip was our visit to the beautiful, serene, majestic Danube River.  We spent the whole morning just basking in awe at its beauty.

We also spent a day trip to Bratislava. We took the train from Vienna to Bratislava and went to the typical tourist places, Old town, the castle and the city center.

The summer of 2022 witnessed our biggest and most awaited post covid travels.  We had a 2 day side trip to Dubai and had a 21 day summer break in Manila, Philippines, my original home, my country. It was already our 4th time in Dubai and as it was a brief 2 days side trip, we had a very specific itinerary.  The highlight was the trip to Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world!! We saw the panoramic view of Dubai on the 124th floor. Entrance fee is approximately 50€/head but it was worth it.  We also spent one morning just having some shots on the Atlantis and Burj Al Arab.  And finally, after sleepless nights and many attempts to rearrange our luggages, we arrived to my motherland, the Philippines.  We stayed in my parents´home, the abode which witnessed our growth.  We spent our 21 day holidays with all of my immediate family members, relatives and closest friends (high school, university and Accenture friends/colleagues). I now have 4 beautiful and lovely nieces and nephews and how I missed them.  We visited a lot of malls, arcades, theme parks and kiddie attractions; we all went to the Enchanted Kingdom.  We also spent a 4 day, all inclusive holiday in Blue Coral Beach Resort in Laiya, Batangas. We also went to Manila and visited Lyceum, my university alma mater.  We also went to visit my middle school alma mater, Colegio de Sta. Catalina. My son also had this First Holy Communion in the Philippines. Such a milestone! Our Manila holidays was filled with so much love, good company, good food and good laughs!! The airport scene going back to Madrid was the most difficult.  I shed a pail of tears.  While my heart was in pain, I was truly grateful for the experience.
